The focus of the administration last week was on the American Jobs Act and a number of proposals related to increasing access to jobs for the unemployed and access to capital for small business.

Passion, energy and motivation, those are three words I’d use to describe the folks involved with the RITE board, a group of individuals dedicated to enhancing IT education in the CLE.

We’ve been involved with the RITE board since its inception a few years ago; it was born out of work with the Ohio Skills Bank and the Regional Talent Network. We’ve posted about RITE on our blog before: here, and we’ve also reported on the effort in the NEOSA newsletter over the past couple of years.

It’s really not a secret that good tech talent is getting hard to come by. In our quarterly survey from the 2nd quarter, 57% of the respondents indicated “some difficulty” finding top tech talent and 13% indicated having a “hard time.” So combined, 70% of companies are having some level of trouble finding talent.

What’s more, 2/3 of respondents are planning to add staff in the next 12 months.

What’s going to happen when (not if) the economy finally improves and there’s even more demand for talent?

We’re with Marc Miller, Founder and CEO of SpearFysh, to learn a little more about the company. Marc founded the company to serve the needs of sales organizations by providing a data capture and analytics tool. SpearFysh has attracted funding, is in beta with a few clients and is working towards a broad market roll-out shortly.

NEOSA: Tell us a little more about SpearFysh – product, markets, etc.
Well, our goal is to turn the sales profession upside down – in a good way! Our technology captures field sales calls (a first!), then takes the recorded audio and mines it for intelligence. This introduces business intelligence into the sales profession – and radically improves sales force effectiveness.

In June, NEOSA hosted a pair of events for the tech community; one focused on marketing and one focused on the economy. On June 4th, Jim Kukral, noted web expert and web evangelist, shared insight on leveraging the variety of web assets for small businesses. More and more companies are investigating social media opportunities, but a lot still don't see value for their company. Jim's presentation was a great eye opener, pointing out how easy it is to get started, but also how applicable social media is to just about any business. The only limit really is the imagination. Our podcast of Jim's presentation captures the content, but also his infectious enthusiasm.

Selling Tech to the C-Level

Selling software and technology solutions is challenging, whether the economy is doing well or when it’s really bad, like now. And getting to the coveted “C-level” suite is doubly difficult. In fact, I can still remember Ray Voelker, CIO of Progressive telling an audience a few years ago, “Don’t call me, I’m so far removed from the buying decision it’s not worth your time.” But there’s a real school of thought that advises sales professionals to “sell as high as possible”, meaning C-level. And while some of those “self-help for sales” books have good advice, nothing beats hearing directly from C-level execs on what works for them.

But even better, we’ve captured their thoughts around these issues: effective cost controls in 2009, priorities for 2010 and most challenging issues .

It’s always a good idea to listen to your customers, especially when they say “yes.” Not exactly a bold statement, but I think tech firms can find this concept a little challenging, especially in a development phase. Sometimes, tech firms can become a little too enthralled with the latest tech they can bring to their clients, not only from a development view, but from a deployment view as well. Most people have heard the phase, “a solution in search of a problem,” and that mindset can be difficult to overcome.

When we talk about “elections,” we’re typically referring to the General Election that occurs each November. However, what many Americans – approximately 54% in fact – fail to realize is the importance of the Primary Elections that take place each spring. While most of the “heavy lifting” in terms of candidate races comes down to the Election in the fall, there are a host of critical ballot issues that often go unnoticed because they are place on the ballot for the Primary Election each year. This Tuesday, May 4, is the Primary Election – which will provide voters with the opportunity to support the renewal of two key economic development issues both locally and throughout the State.

Our friends at LCCC hosted a group of about 20 IT executives and educators this morning for a strategy session on the structure of their curriculum for IT education. It was a high level discussion focused not on individual curriculum, but on the school’s strategy for educating students. They’re keenly focused on ensuring students are best prepared to either continue their education through one of several university partnerships, or enter the workforce once they complete the associate’s degree requirements.

The Top 5 Ways to Lose Money When Selling Your Software Company

As the economy rebounds, and most signs point to a rebound, the global market for software deals is heating up. Projected dollar value of transactions in 2010 is expected to be more than double 2009 ($322b vs. $150b) and the number of deals is also expected to increase, by about 9%. Valuations are also increasing over last year. The 4th quarter of 2009 saw an EBITDA multiplier of 9.35x compared to 6.66x at Q4 2008 while a sales multiple measure was 1.75x versus 1.03x. Another interesting trend is that financial buyers are returning to the market after a hiatus for the past couple of years. While financial buyers typically won’t pay the premium that strategic buyers will, the funds they control and the dollar volume of deals they can do significantly exceeds the same for strategic buyers.

These uncertainties appear to be affecting the regional tech sector as well as our most recent quarterly survey showed a slight reversal of some positive trends from the first quarter survey.

According to The Center for American Progress, Ohio has ranked #10 in the Top 10 states for policies that promote energy efficiency. In my opinion, Ohio still hasn’t fully tapped into the power of using less power. While SB 221 S.B. 221 became effective in 2008 and includes the framework for Energy Efficiency and Peak Demand Management, and Alternative Energy Resource Requirements, little has yet been done.

The past few years have been some of the most troubling for many small business owners out there. Many of you experience anxiety and hesitation about the economic condition of this region, state, and nation. Others are seeing slow growth but remain conservative about hiring for fear that the economy isn’t finished falling. That said, others of you have talked of success and the ability to utilize a depressed market to take your business to the next level. Regardless of your experience, it’s pretty safe to say that the past few years have brought about changes – good and bad - for many of you. However, what hasn’t changed is the important role that small business owners like you play in the revitalization of this economy and the resilience you continue to portray as a small business community - even in the most challenging of times.

I had lunch with a local tech company yesterday, a software company that’s doing well and is now up to 55 employees. Among other things, “Joe” told me that their company had recently, seriously, considered an acquisition offer. An offer that came from an out of state buyer.

The offer was financially attractive but the deal breaker was operation and management of the company after the transaction. Joe’s company, when/if acquired, wants to operate as a subsidiary or division of the acquiring company. Unfortunately in this case, their operations would have been merged with another portfolio company of the acquiring company and most autonomy would have been lost. So the two sides walked away from the deal, for now.

I’ve been thinking about tech jobs in the CLE lately; the market is quickly starting to heat up.

A month or so ago, Dice issued a report that showed Cleveland is the 3rd fastest growing IT jobs market in the country. In fact, Cincinnati, Cleveland and Columbus were ranked 2 through 4 on the list.

Additionally, in the most recent NEOSA quarterly survey we’ve seen some very interesting trends and point data information. At the fourth quarter, 58% of companies reported plans to add staff in the next twelve months. That figure has been fairly steady over the course of the year, but we’ve seen a definite, improvement in companies looking to shed staff, from 12% planning to do so a year ago to just 2% most recently. In fact, that 2% number is right in line with where we were pre-recession from the 3rd quarter of 2007 through the 2nd quarter of 2008.

However, I will say that there was a very interesting vibe among the audience, one that was a little tough to put my finger on. A phrase I heard repeated several times was, “This is a total waste of time.” But I wasn’t sure if the phrase was directed to the complaints of a few entrepreneurs or the structure of the meeting, or the responses of JumpStart to questioning or what. But I got a distinct sense that it was a little bit of all that.

Maybe it’s the change of season, but I still sense some excitement from the Summit. I’ve heard from attendees about how invigorated they felt after that day. You already know that there’s a sense of pride that resonates with being a small business owner. But it seems like the small business owners that I have run into over the last month have a renewed sparkle in their eyes.

Yesterday I worked downtown at the COSE offices, then headed to Kent to meet with some members there. It's a bit of a drive, but I don't really mind that. I enjoy driving and I try to look around, listen to podcasts or music. We have such a beautiful region. I have the joy of checking out Lake Erie and the Grand River every day, no matter where I go. I love to see how Main Streets are reinventing themselves (like in Painesville and Ashtabula Harbor and Kent).

After a 15-month delay, the Public Utilities Commission approved FirstEnergy’s portfolio of energy efficiency programs, which it had initially proposed in December 2009 to comply with the requirements of Senate Bill 221. The portfolio contains two major facets that will be of concern for small businesses – the new DSE2 rider, which will appear on your electric bills within the next few months, and a set of rebate programs to help businesses finance energy efficiency upgrades to their facilities.

Way back in the day, marketing a business was pretty simple. You bought a phone line, took out an ad in the Yellow Pages and waited for the dollars to roll in. Fast forward many years and now marketing a business is pretty complicated. Not only do companies have to overcome all the marketing “noise” that buyers are subjected to, but there are new tools available nearly every day - social media, SEO, email marketing, text messaging and on and on.

We recently came across a local software company, Realeflow, that’s been incredibly successful leveraging “new media” to grow their company. I’m not even sure if I can count all the zeros in a trillion dollars. To put this into perspective, the $61.6 trillion breaks down to $534,000 per household, according to USA Today. While I’m not an economist or a financial expert, I do know that something must be done to control our federal debt.

At the Small Business Summit that COSE organized last February, a lot of participants told us that they enjoyed the experience and they hoped we wouldn’t just let the recommendations and ideas fade away without action. I appreciate that because I have had the misfortune to be involved with a number of similar sessions that are high on enthusiasm but short on follow-up.

We told you at the summit that we would get a summary of the proceedings out within a month or so and we did that in April. In that report, found here, we also told you that we wanted to organize and support a next step.
