Energy Forum: Best Practices in Energy Management

Tuesday, March 23, 2010
8:30 am - 10:30 am

All energy intensive businesses in Ohio will soon be faced with energy efficiency mandates as a result of the passing of Senate Bill (SB) 221.  The new mandates will directly impact your business.  COSE’s designation as an Administrator in FirstEnergy’s Energy Efficiency Collaborative permits us to work with Mercantile Electric Customers (greater than 700,000 kWH annual usage) to help them reduce demand, save energy dollars and meet the energy efficiency standards in SB 221 when possible.

COSE is committed to helping as many businesses as possible avoid potential surcharges (DSE2 Rider) in 2010 and experience the additional cost benefits of energy efficiency improvements.  The Demand Side Management and Energy Efficiency Rider (DSE2) will assess an additional fee for each kWh of electricity consumed by non-residential customers in order to recover the costs associated with peak demand reduction and energy efficiency programs.  The fee can be avoided by Mercantile Electric Customers demonstrating implementation of qualifying energy efficiency projects. To date, COSE has already submitted several Mercantile applications to the PUCO on behalf of our members.

Join the Council of Smaller Enterprises (COSE) and The Greater Cleveland Partnership (GCP) for an information session on best practices in energy management. This session will be focused on the benefits of demand side management and FirstEnergy’s energy efficiency rider (DSE2).  DSE2 charges are currently 0.0¢ per KWH, but will increase in line with FirstEnergy’s compliance costs for SB 221 Demand Side Management and Energy Efficiency requirements.  Learn the steps your business can take to report energy conservation efforts already made.  Learn how to make qualified investments in new energy efficiency improvements to reduce energy consumption and prevent new charges.

If your business is a Mercantile Electric Customer and has made energy efficiency investments since 2007, you may be eligible to report these reductions in your electricity usage to FirstEnergy and bypass the DSE2 Rider on your bill.  COSE will work with you to identify eligible projects, quantify savings and submit the proper paperwork to avoid increased electric costs.  Complete and return the Energy Efficiency Mercantile Form to determine eligibility. For questions and more information, contact Nicole Stika, Director Energy Programs by email at nstika@cose.org or by phone at 216.592.2338.
