Lighting Retrofit Program
COSE Lighting Retrofit Program
For many businesses, a comprehensive lighting upgrade represents the first and one of the best steps towards becoming more energy efficient. The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that lighting represents 40% of the average commercial building’s electric bill. And according to the Energy Cost Savings Council, lighting retrofits have an average 45% return on investment.
In order to help our members take of advantage of these benefits, COSE has created the COSE Lighting Retrofit Program. We have partnered with EcoEngineering, Leff Electric and Lighting Services, Inc. to provide customized consulting and solutions for energy efficient lighting improvements.
For more information please call (216) 245-1457
COSE will match your business with one of our partner organizations, which will then perform a thorough lighting audit of your business and provide you with detailed information on:
- Energy cost savings from the project
- Environmental benefits of the retrofit
- Estimated timeframe for payback

FirstEnergy Lighting Rebate Program
If your business is located in the FirstEnergy service territory, you may qualify for a rebate to help significantly lower the cost of your lighting project. Effective April 11, FirstEnergy is providing a rebate of $0.80 for each watt your lighting upgrade saves. On October 11, the value will switch to $0.65 per watt. Rebates are only available for projects have not begun. In order to receive the rebate, you need to secure pre-approval from FirstEnergy.
COSE has been designated as an administrator to help you complete the required application process. For more information or to apply for a rebate, contact the COSE Energy Team at energy@cose.org or (216) 592-2338.

Local Business Case Study
COSE member Logan Clutch, a local manufacturing business with 20 employees, has benefited from a recent comprehensive lighting retrofit of their 25,000 square foot facility. The retrofit:
- Will reduce energy costs by 49%
- Will save the company $39,900 over the next five years
- Has a payback period of 2.6 years
- Will save 91,518 lbs. of greenhouse gas emissions a year
Lighting Regulation Changes
It is becoming increasingly important for businesses to consider upgrading their lighting systems, as recent legislation and regulation have changed the lighting market. As a result of the 2005 Energy Policy Act, T12 fluorescent lights, the most common lighting source in most commercial settings, will be effectively banned after June 30, 2012. As the regulation is phased in, it will become increasingly difficult to find replacement bulbs and fixtures for T12s. Upgrading to energy saving fixtures now will not only save your business money and energy, but also enable you to prepare for this change.
