I had the pleasure to see Dr. Roizen, Chief Wellness Officer of the Cleveland Clinic Wellness Institute, speak at the Sales & Marketing Executives (SME) Cleveland monthly networking luncheon on May 24th. Attendees represented many different types of businesses, from health care to advertising, but we all share one thing in common: bad genes. “What?”
SME attendees saw a video of Rocco, the 53-year old Cowboy from Arizona, who was overweight, diabetic (on medication to control it), and had the “Real Age” heart of an 85-year old. Rocco loved his meat and potatoes, which had taken a toll on his health that would severely affect his overall health if he didn’t do something fast. Enter Dr. Roizen and Dr. Oz, and Rocco’s 28-day turnaround.
Dr. Roizen is called “The Enforcer” by Dr. Mehmet Oz, who we know from Oprah, and his own syndicated talk show, plus his myriad of books and publications such as “You: The Owner’s Manual”. Together they helped Rocco change his diet and physical activity habits in one month. Rocco lost 30 pounds, dropped his blood glucose by 73 points into the “normal” range, and increased his good cholesterol (HDL) by 12 points. See his story in this video.
He got a “do-over”.
Bad Genes
Dr. Roizen told us that we all get a “do-over”. We all possess bad genes such as cancerous genes, but we can turn our bad genes off if we make healthy changes in our lifestyles and practice these 4 health habits:
· walking 30 minutes a day (being physically active)
· watching our portion sizes with good food choices
· not smoking
· managing our stress
Dr. Roizen showed a slide from a study of the genes of prostate cancer patients. It was a before/after picture, just like a makeover show. The genes of prostate cancer patients actually experienced a makeover with the help of the 4 healthy changes above. Healthy diet, exercise, stress reduction and smoking cessation tactics actually turned off the bad genes for cancer in the bodies of these patients. By incorporating the 4 healthy habits we can re-write our personal health history, and reduce our real age by quite a few years. What are you waiting for?
