Year Established: Although I had some part time/freelance opportunities during my first year out of art school, I became a professional designer in 1985, when I got my first, full-time design job at a small design studio on the West side call Graphics Etc. After that I worked as an art director at a video production studio, then opened my graphic design studio in 1994.
Type of Work: Drummond Design is a graphic design studio that creates dynamic communications solutions that make good business sense. Also, my partner is a technical illustrator and new media designer.
COSE Member Since: 2003
Benefits of Membership: Networking is my #1 reason for being a COSE member. Currently most of the clients we are working with we've met through COSE events. The informational seminars and the conferences are other big reasons. COSE Business Space is also a great perk because we work out of our home. We also save money on utility bills.
About: Both my partner and I have been professional designers and illustrators for 24 years each. We have been in business for ourselves for 14 years. We have found that our best work is done for clients who have trust in our abilities and respect for us as individuals, which is good for us and for our clients.
Connect: I connect art and business by showing how good design is good for business. A business must differentiate themselves creatively from their competition in order to excel. If you don't have a unique brand, product or service, all you have is a commodity.
Advice: In my opinion artists need to deal with businesses in a professional manor. A business needs to see credibility, as well as creativity. A business needs to keep in mind when working with a graphic designer that designers are interpreters, making abstract ideas visible, and therefore understandable. This is a unique skill and a business will do well to invest in a creative team to assist them in accomplishing their goals.
