What was your “Ah Ha” moment that prompted the launch of your home business?
I had two “Ah Ha” moments. The first was when I was a stay-at-home dad. I loved setting my own daily schedule/projects and began to think about how I could start a family business. The second was when I tried to re-enter the “paid” workforce (after being a stay-at-home dad) as an administrator in 2006. I could not see myself enjoying the confinement of a desk and daily routine. At that point, my wife had already obtained a real estate license and the thought came to us to start a home-based real estate business. I obtained my real estate license within three months of this decision and our family business was born. Currently, we are real estate agents with Keller Williams Greater Cleveland West.
Best thing you have done for your home business?
Going into business with my wife is the best thing I have done for our home business. With 30 years of experience as an attorney, she brings vast experience from the “for profit” work sector, while I bring experience from the “not-for-profit” sector.
What is something that is truly unique about how you run your business and care for clients?
Our business is unique, as we provide personalized services for every client and work with them as their professional real estate consultants. We believe in giving our clients the most information and communication possible, so they can make the best real estate decisions for themselves. Our goal is to earn our clients trust. In addition, since we work as a team, our clients have two real estate agents working for them.
What is your secret to striking work/life balance?
I am still working on this. It is a daily battle for my partner and me. We are not there yet.
What is your biggest challenge in running a home business?
Achieving a work/life balance is a big challenge. In a home-based business, you have to make a concerted effort to avoid becoming “home office bound” and working too many hours in a day/week. When one has to do everything from A to Z in his or her business, the hours mount up quickly.
What advice would you have for those looking to start a home business?
First, research the business you are getting into. Given your “start up” costs/other expenses and the predicted revenue, determine at what point you can reasonably expect to make a profit. You may have to depend on savings or other assets to cover expenses until you can make a profit. Second, get involved with COSE. Access the information and resources available and talk to members/staff who can help you succeed.
