Currently Senior Vice President of Membership Development and Marketing at the GCP, Kim has been with the organization since 2005. In this capacity, she works to ensure the organization brings benefit and value to the GCP’s diverse membership segments ranging from entrepreneurs and small businesses to middle-market companies and the largest corporations in Northeast Ohio. She will retain this role and continue reporting to GCP President and CEO Joe Roman, adding the COSE Executive Director responsibilities to her portfolio.

Scott Chaikin, Executive Chairman of Dix & Eaton and Chair of GCP’s Board of Directors stated, “The GCP membership is comprised of thousands of small businesses and advocating on their behalf continues to be a priority. From workforce and education to advocacy, business expansion and neighborhood development, the GCP team is consistently considering the needs of and impact of their work on entrepreneurs and business owners across Northeast Ohio.

"I have great admiration for the passion, dedication and energy of small business owners,” Kim said. “I am grateful for the opportunity to ensure that through COSE we are connecting them to the right resources and support to help their businesses grow resulting in more successful companies, new jobs and a stronger Northeast Ohio economy."

  • Growing Your Business by Staying Motivated

The Cleveland Trucking industry isn’t always the glitz and glamour you might imagine. Working anywhere in the county as a logistics professional can sometimes be dull. If you are a Freight broker, Freight forwarder, working with Truck load or LTL, flatbed, or reefers, it doesn’t matter, if you can’t stay motivated you are going to get bored. I think of time as money and if I am wasting time waiting for work then I am wasting money.

One thing I do to help stay motivated and kill the boredom is by working on parts of the industry we currently aren’t successful in. By spending down time learning the other aspects of this industry I can speak more intelligently about it to our customers if topics ever come up. For example, we are currently growing the flatbed portion of our business and every minute I have away from my day to day routine I am learning about the flatbed industry. Calling carriers and getting feedback, what works and doesn’t work, what information they prefer from their brokers. Information is power and whomever has the most can call the shots. We are a relatively small fish in the flatbed industry but even the smallest fish can make waves if they stay motivated. Instead of twiddling my thumbs waiting for work to do, I like to make the work happen for myself.

Getting comfortable in your daily routine is a breeding ground for boredom and will stop you from seeing your true potential. Getting out of your comfort zone is a terrific way to build you brand. Don’t know anything about LTL? Call UPS. Don’t know anything about intermodal? Go down to the rail yard. Don’t be afraid to make yourself vulnerable, if you are uncomfortable it probably means you are doing something right and putting yourself in a position to learn. You can’t learn to swim if you don’t get wet and you can’t get wet unless you get in the water. Get out there and make some waves.

In the world of freight, one area that causes ongoing confusion for our small- to midsize-clients is inbound shipping. When you don’t have a dock or logistics resources, inbound shipping can quickly be pushed to a vendor responsibility and control of costs and visibility is lost. Here are three inbound shipping basics to help you save time and money.

    Create a Vendor Compliance Policy

It’s beneficial for vendors, shippers and everyone in-between for a supply chain to operate efficiently. This can be done through visibility, compliance, and continual examination of the supply chain operations.

This starts with a solid vendor compliance policy. A vendor compliance policy is a document that can help your company avoid numerous problems, including improper purchase orders, incorrect labels, incomplete bill of landing, late deliveries, damage, and much more. You can use a vendor compliance document to spell out your company’s requirements, expectations, and penalties regarding orders and shipments to your business.

    Keep Visibility

You can achieve visibility over inbound shipments by implementing a set of specific “Ship Via” instructions. Using the term “Best Way” for your shipping instructions, allows your vendor to choose a shipping method and bill you accordingly. In most cases, it will be the most convenient method for your vendor, not at the least cost to you. This section should be used to refer the vendor to your compliance policy or your 3PL for proper shipping instructions.

You can also gain visibility of your shipments by using a transportation management system (TMS). There are a wide variety of transportation management systems on the market to fit every business’ needs. Most companies can cater their software to fit your processes and budget, driving the value up for you.

Many small businesses choose to partner with a 3PL, such as GTS, to handle their shipping and freight needs. Not only do you gain access to their TMS and carrier network, but you also get a team of logistics experts for personalized service and solutions.

    RECEIVING FREIGHT

By instituting a standard receiving process and enforcing it among employees, you can make sure you receive a proper settlement if a claims situation occurs.

When a shipment arrives at your location, it is imperative that you inspect the container and contents for damage. When you sign a delivery receipt without noting the damage or missing pieces, your freight claim may be denied.

If you approve the condition of your shipment, review the delivery receipt closely. If you sign on the dotted line without reviewing all of the information, you could pay for services that weren’t needed or rendered.
